ASA Field Stations In Europe
This page is meant primarily as a short overview of the various Field Stations, especially as related to SIT and DF Operations. Many of the stations listed had many different military designations over the years. I have chosen to call them here the generic names most will recognize and used informally.
Field Station Augsburg. In 1972 the missions at Field Stations Bad Aibling, Rothwesten and Herzo Base were consolidated and mostly transferred to Augsburg and the stations closed or turn over to other agencies. The ASA Hq element in Frankfurt was deactivated. DF sites, except for Schleswig Detachment, not already deactivated or closed were closed -- Ravenna Detachment, Memmingen Detachment

Field Station Herzo Base: Duane Hanekow's comments regarding Herzo Base DF site alignments and turmoil in the middle sixties:
30 Jun 2003 email from Duane Hanekow regarding Detachment/Site Turmoil during a portion of the 1960s:
Hi Tom,
Good to hear from you. When I arrived at Herzo Base, 183d ASA Co, in
the fall of 1963, there were two DF dets (Giebelstadt and Memmengin)
belonging to the 183d. Giebelstadt was Det A. This det closed approx Dec
1963 and a new det at Sinzig was opened. Then Giebelstadt was reopened and
Sinzig closed. Can't remember if the Det A title went to Sinzig and then
back to Giebelstadt. The 183d also opened a det at Pocking and I think the
Memmengin det was resubordinated (or maybe it closed - lots of turmoil in
those days) to the 320th ASA Bn at Bad Aibling sometime during my tour at
Herzo. I was the acting Det Cdr at Giebelstadt from Oct 63 until it closed
on Dec 63. LTC J.J. McFadden, the Herzo commander had a policy that no
married people would be assigned to the dets. Only reason I went to
Geibelstadt was my family had not yet arrived in Germany and we knew the det
was closing. Policy later was changed and Ed Dunn became Det Cdr when
Giebelstadt reopened. Think this info is accurate, after all, its only been
40 years.
Regards, Duane
