Bremerhaven Germany DF Detachment

Some Bremerhaven Detachment personnel in the 60s

Front row squatting: John Ford, Marcus Curley, Myself (Chick Foote) Standing: Johnny Roberts (skivvies), Forget the SP4, Dutch (in tie - an intercept op), Keith Lantz, Rudy (local bar owner), Throckmorton, Frank (tie and cigarette - also intercept op), Richard (seal-beam) Farrell, and Bonnette.  Photo Richard (Chick) Foote."Bremerhaven pic (above) is from 1957 shortly after I had taken over the Det. Three others are missing from the photo (Dick Strader, Scott Messenger, and ? Long).

In 57 at the det we had a AN/TRD-4 and a separate collection shelter.  The collectors were always in civies and pretty much stayed to themselves. In those days, the duffies were not even allowed in the collection shelter." --->Richard (Chick) Foote.

The Detachment was actually closer to a small town outside of Bremerhaven proper at Neuenwalde close to Hymendorf but a bit North.  When I was there we were a Det of the 307th ASA Bn  (nee 307th CommRecon Bn) based in Kassel.

The Det was  turned over to Bad Aibling sometime in 1957/58 and we were redeployed to form two new DF sites, one at Helmstead and the second at Lubeck. I had the Helmstead Det  until recalled to Kassel in late 1958 and subsequent rotation to CONUS.  Dick Strader set up the Lubeck site.

Also true that when Bremerhaven finally did close it was relocated to  Schleswig.  Don't remember the year though

-----Richard (Chick) Foote

***From all I can determine the Bremerhaven site was closed in the 66/67 time frame when the Schleswig site was opened.---TH
