Another of Jim's photos (below) in front of the new (to me) detachment office building--eight or nine of the det's people in a group photo. Note - Click photos for larger view.

Schleswig Germany Radio Direction Finding Detachment

Entrance to Schleswig detachment circa 1976

Located a couple of miles north of Schleswig, Germany in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein the Schleswig DF Detachment had about a twenty-eight year or so life span under several different USASA and USAINSCOM organizations, the last being Field Station Augsburg, before time and events made it obsolete -- or, at least no longer needed. For many of us fortunate enough to serve there it was: "The best ASA/INSCOM assignment in Europe". At least it was after Ravenna DF Detachment closed in 1972.

<<<<-- To the left is the "Entrance" many of us remember. It was relocated with the upgrade of the site and construction of new facilities in later years.

Best I have been able to determine
, Schleswig Detachment was activitated n the 1966/67 time frame when the Bremerhaven Detachment was closed/relocated? th

To the right is an image of the AN/TRD-15 antenna viewed from near the operations building winter 76-77. Click theWinter view of Schleswig Detachment's AN/TRD-15 antenna field in winter 76/77 image for a 1980s aerial view after a Pusher Antenna Syestem was installed and here for a 1992 Soviet SPIN2 satelite Overhead view (in the time frame of the detachment's closure).

View taken from the edge of the antenna array looking more or less South. Left to Right - Basic load storage bunker, Operations Building, Burning Shed for classified material, Three part garage building (Mail Room, Site Administrative Office, Emergency Generator), Temporary -porta kamp type - Trailers (Storage and Parts Supply).  Photo circa 1976-1978.

I guess it's time to get my oar into the water. I was in the original group going into Neuberend/Schleswig. I was teamed up with a big guy by the name of Jack Pickett from New Mexico as 05D ops. The British Pub that I knew was run by the guy we called the "Limey", William or Bill Jacques. It was a great tour of duty and I still have very fond memories of the town. I got married to a local girl in the big church called "Dom Petri" (As a matter of fact, quite a few guys got married to girls in that town)  Somewhere I learned from friends in the German town government that the ratio of unmarried woman to men in that town was around 6  to 1. The big maintenance guy we called "Murph" who became a bartender in Schleswig sure could drink. At my wedding, he downed at least 6   8 oz tumblers full of whiskey trying to outdo a German relative of mine named Max. I saw him in 1979 when I had to go to Germany on business, by then his health was deteriorating. He had fathered a child by a woman in Schleswig name Marliss. Ran into them on Lollfuss Str. Surprised when I learned they stopped cars running down Stadtweg. Did not like the Viking Tower. I am amazed to learn the Detachment survived for 29 years and the extent of the Alumni who passed through that lovely place.
