I never can remember the correct name (Jim Moran has told me several times but I continue to forget) of the winter favorite beer and Pizza joint in Ravenna, but many great times and not really that much money spent there. Photos provided by Mike Mulich, Dave Allison (sent in by Enrico, Dave's son in Italy), and Brian Alpert. Jim Moran captions marked - JM
Note from Dick Brannan, Dec 2010:
The name of the Spatenbrau place was "Bar Valentino" located on Via Salara. It was owned by the Bentini's. When the father died in the late 60's, his son Angelo took over. Angelo and his wife Edda now have a few Fendi clothing shops in Ravenna. Angelo's mom, who was the chief cook in the kitchen, is still with us and must be around 100 now.
I noticed in one of the Ravenna photos at the Spatenbrau that Nanni and "Il Maestro" (school teacher) Asconi were it in. Nanni is the nearly bald one that enjoyed doing cheers and attempting to break our beer mugs in the process. Both have since passed away. Maestro Asconi was the secretary of the Casa delle Aie until his passing. The year after I left Ravenna for Vint Hill Farms, he made me an honory member of the Aie's association. I miss him a lot. You probably know that Ivo (co-owner of the then Motel Romea) passed away several years ago. His partner, Jacamo, bought the cafe Tassa d'Oro in the Piazza del Papolo but sold it about 5 years ago and retired.
