Det 2 330th RRC Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam

Cam Ranh Bay 330th RRC DF DetachmentPhoto Douglas Meadows, January 1967

Extracted from Douglas Meadows eMail:
Date: Monday, August 06, 2001 12:20 AM

I have just finished entering my info on the sign up roster. Here are 2 pictures of my Det. One picture is of the living area and was taken in January of 1967 even though the border shows September of 67 (I didn't develop my film as quickly as I should have). The second picture was taken from the back of a deuce and a half in April of 1969 as I was leaving the Det for the last time and heading for Nha Trang. I hope you can use them.

Douglas E. Meadows

Also from Doug:  "This Det was referred to as being located at Cam Rahn Bay, however, its actual location was near Dong Ba Thin on the mainland. Cam Rahn was a number of klicks away"

The photo album consists of photographs from Doug Meadows and John Perkins (who was in the 330th RRC in Pleiku and took the pictures  while on a TDY trip to the detachment). If you can ID any or all of the people in the phtos please let me know via the contact form. Added March 2008 Barney Reynolds has been able to ID quite a few of the people in the photos. Still need help on the rest tho.

Subject: Cam Ranh Bay Det

Douglas Meadows provided information about the Cam Ranh Bay Det. 2.  In October 1970, I stayed at this detachment overnight, prior to flying out of Cam Ranh AFB to Phu Cat AFB to what was then Detachment 3, 330th RR Co. I don't know when the detachment designation changed changed, but prior to October 1970, this was re-designated Detachment 8, 330th RR Co. 8, the "8 Ball" Detachment. The ops there had obtained a large metal marine buoy about 6 feet in diameter and painted it to look like an 8 ball.

The "8 Ball" was still there by June or July of 1971 when I would drive by the then abandoned detachment on the way to deliver equipment to Cam Ranh Bay Naval base, for shipment to the United States. About July or August of 1971 on the way to the Naval base again, I saw the 8 ball had disappeared from the detachment location. After delivering the equipment for shipment to the U.S., I drove back to Nha Trang. A few miles down the road I found the 8 Ball again. It was in front of a local Vietnamese business.

On the next trip to Cam Ranh Bay, I saw the 8 ball was no longer existent. It had been repainted a different color. I can not remember what color it was changed to but it pissed me off. I wanted to report the guy to the police for theft!! LOL

Comment: Great pics guys. I've got a few myself but I'll have to dig 'em out. I didn't get to this site until about 1969. Waking up my first moring there, I opened an eye and I saw a monkey sitting up in the rafters brushing his teeth. I thought I was dreamin' but no, there was JoJo in the rafters brushing his chops. So I start laughing.
Guy across from asks me what I'm laughing at and I tell him to look up. He looks up and starts laughing himself and then he says "Hey, who's stuff does he have?" Then he says "It's my stuff" and starts chasing JoJo around the hut. He catches Jo and has him by the back legs and asks me to open the screen door. I'm holding the door open as Jo flys by and lands in a hugh water puddle.
What an introduction to Cam Rahn site. In 1969 I was stationed there with 05D's Nick Klinkenberg, Doug Miller, Bill Gates (not THAT Bill Gates)- the Bad Bastard from Bellflower, Dennis Wessel, Don Hamby. Any of those names sound familiar?
I transferred back and forth from Cam Rahn to Pleiku and left the 330th as an E-5 in June of 1970. I ETS's out of Fort Hood in 1971.
Anybody want to get in touch email me at Jeffbuckley007@yahoo.com.

Comment: I was stationed at Det 2 from about Nov 1970 til we stood down about seven months later. We all went back to Nha Trang to finish off our tours.
