Distintive Unit Insigna of Army Security Agency

Overhead Ft Devens MA

G Division, SIT, and BS

Message: Tom,

Just surfed in after chatting with a guy from NJ -- One of the first at Chaing Mai Dan Hennessey.... Anyhow, I have been on the Old Spooks and Spies net for a long time, and finally got signed on here.

Just wanted to pass along that what we once knew as G Division is no more. I was up there a couple of years ago, and most of Devens is an industrial park with all kinds of warehouse etc. Appropriately, they replaced G-Division with a Budweiser Bottling Plant. The only two buildings still standing were the G-Div Head Shed and the room where the remoted TRD-23 positions were installed.

Ken

Here are two G Division area photos from 1998.
Present use is unknown.

Typically DF Ops in training were diverted from Morse Interceptor (MOS 058 and other designations over the years) Training after passing 15/18 Groups Per Minute Morse Code (CW) copying. Handout cover from the 1950s provided by Norm Kitchin.

"G" Division and USASATC&S and Fort Devens

Route across Ft Devens parade ground to USASATC&S Main School buildingsFor many years most Army Security Agency DF Operators started out at "G" Division of the USASATC&S, Fort Devens, Massachusetts. This usually involved being diverted, after some weeks in the Manual Morse Interceptor course to the DF operators course after passing 15/18 gpm (groups per minute) in the Manual Morse Interceptor course. So here are a few pictures of "G" Division and Devens that have been contributed. Yes! It (G Division) was unfenced until some time after June 1960 and before January 1972. Maybe someone will pop up with the exact dates. Would also like to get a couple more earlier photos. If you have some please contribute.

NOTE about the two photos above. The crest is the USASATC&S ' worn until the school was deactivated in 92/93 or somewhere there about. The photo adjoining is looking across the Devens parade ground to the main school houses of TC&S. The crest photo/scan is from my saved crest and the photo of the school building contributed by Mac MacKusick (Lecce & Ravenna Detachments). TC&S = Training Center and School. The students and cadre were held/assigned to the USASA Training Regiment; Headquarters Company (most of the School Cadre) and two Student Battalions.
