Project DF Site Location
Project DF Site Location or "DF Site Location Project" is Richard Kremzier's Google Earth based project to pinpoint the exact location of all of ASA's worldwide direction finding sites. Establishing other ASA unit locations is secondary but also part of the project. I have joined with Rich via the web-site in an effort to move the project to completion. Hope Duffys everywhere check the project out and lend a hand.

In the left column are links to download Google Earth (required), the Site Locator kmz file and Rich's Site Locator concept overview, and background information files. Please use the comments form below to provide your information about site locations. Rich and I will update the kmz file as we go along to try to have the latest and most accurate location available in new file downloads.
Also please use the Comment Form to Update your findings so that everyone can see them without us having to respond to or forward a lot of email. Thanks -- Also I will from time to time add replies to your original comments which will appear within your comment.

Didn't know Det. A was re-established on Adak after we left in May 1957 and moved to Shemya as the 281 USASA Co. I arrived Adak in 56 and then and prior the detachment was neither part of nor colocated with the USN. There was a CG-Loran station on the coast of Mt Moffet, Clam Lagoon NAVCOMSTA, the Naval Base, and an Army Ionospheric Sounding Station. Does anyone recall the 8.9 earthquake on Adak in Feb 57?
Here is the location of the DF Site as of September 1659. + 42° 48’ 56.61” +141° 42’ 10.92”. This site was called Iceberg, and replaced an earlier site called Igloo. We worked out of Temporary Military hut until the Spring of 1960. For a couple months we worked out of a temporary site while a cement permanent building was erected. I do not know if the temporary site we used was the old Igloo site, but logic tells me that would be the most likely place to go. The location of the temporary site is + 42° 48’ 40.60” +141° 41’ 51.57”.
(Editing Note: See the DF Outstation 12th USASAFS page for more info and story from Tim.)
The location of our Operations Building and Our DF Net Control was +42° 51” 42.21” +141° 43’ 41.30”. I am certain of the DF site location. I am pretty sure of the Operations Building. There has been a lot of construction in that area, and it is a bit confusing.
The site was located at: 49-39-29N x 9-57-13E northeast of town where there is currently a house and barn.
Location 52Deg 09 min 20.00 Sec North, 10Deg, 54Min, 34.91Sec East
That is as close as I can get to the location of the VHF DF NCS and site, the other sites were Rodenbeck and Gartow. It was suposed to only work line of site, but was considerably better than that, especally after it went up on the Torie Tower when the new site renovations were compleated in 73, with the new site and Opns building. The old Opns building was still there when I went back in 82, but was used for supply/motor pool.
14th USASAFS DF site location, Hakata Annex (to Itazuke AFB), located near the small town of Gannosu, Japan. Nearest large city was Fukuoka, Japan.
33º40'13.35" N 130º23'02.40E
Coordinates are approximate, but as near as I can recall after 48 years. Only the golf course remains of the base. The rest has been converted to an amusement park, a Seaworld, a resort, restauramts. and other entertainment centers. The DF site was on the narrow stretch of land between the base and Gannosu.
I was there from about May 1960 to April 1963. Converted from DF to RFP about May 1961.
9th USASAFS DF site at Clark AFB, Phillipines
15º 10'56.31" N 120º 34' 41.75" E
The DF site was approximatey 400 to 500 yards from the center of the Clark AFB runway on the side opposite the hangers and control tower. At the time it was all open area.
I was there six weeks from April to May, 1960, and then was shipped to 14th USASAFS due to overstaffing.

Hatien in Vietnam - ARVN Site?
Gatow - Was that the DF site for the Berlin SOU? 50s? 60s?
Cantho? Who was there? ARVN, RRU, 175th RRC?
Shemya, Adak - Any ASA DF activity at either place?
