name: TomH email: Home page: City: State: Country: comments: Improved quality of photos Site After the Big Snow. Not much improved - but some. Added another view also. Two questions: 1. When did the 600th disappear and site went directly under BA control? 2. When move to apartment bldg happen? time: 2000-05-12 06:21:49

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

name: Rich (Andy) Anderson City: Rochester Hills State: Mi Country: comments: The 600th broke up in about 08/67. If I recall correctly we moved out of the Motel in early 1967, maybe March or April. I think we moved for economic reasons. It was cheaper to live in the apartments with our own cook and maid. One of the maids from the Motel , Maria and her daughter , did the cooking and cleaning. She was a pretty good cook. I still remember the homemade lasagna she would fix. time: 2000-05-12 13:37:28

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

name: Jim Moran comments: Rich: Where was the apartment house located, in relation to the hotel? Did you all live in one big unit, or did you several units? I understand Dino, the Lowenbrau man, built a nice bar for you. time: 2000-05-12 19:11:06

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

name: Rich Anderson email: Home page: City: State: Country: comments: Jim, from the hotel you would turn left and go to the canal road that was just a little bit north. You could turn left on the canal road and go over to the next major road and then turn right and the apartments were right there. It was probably a couple or three miles away. It has been over thirty years so direction may not be completely accurate but that is the general direction. As for Dino, yes he brought in a Lowenbrau bar for us and he supplied that and the air for the kegs for free. All we had to pay for was the beer. The more I think about it I realize defending this country was not easy but, doggone it, somebody had to do it. To all, has there been a decision on a reunion? If so, we need to start selling the idea to those who are not on the internet and we'll have to contact them by other means. time: 2000-05-12 20:20:09

name: Rich Anderson email: Home page: City: State: Country: comments: Jim, I forgot to answer part of your question. As you can see looking at Al's picture it was a high rise building. In fact it was one of two similar buildings. Each floor had four apartments. When we moved in we had all four of the apartments on the first floor. I think each apartment had three bedrooms. In the living room of one of them is where we set up the bar. In another living room we had set up kind of like a living room. I forget what we had in the other two apartments. I guess the army furnished them for us. I can't remember where the furniture came from. Maybe someone else can fill us in on that. I think the apartments were brand new when we moved in so we were the first tenants. It was pretty good living. Talk to you later. time: 2000-05-13 09:41:25

name: jim moran City: bala cynwyd State: pa Country: comments: We used to call the entrance road to the site "Burma Road" because it had so many potholes. The big challenge was to not put the truck or jeep into the ditch along the road. As you turned in off the main highway, there used to be an orchard and occasionally there'd be people in there screwing. They'd cover up fast when we went by. When I was in Ravenna two years ago, the road was nicely paved and the orchard was gone. And no sex. time: 2000-05-13 17:55:41

Two weeks ago I sent out a couple of letters and photos to two of the guys who were at Ravenna when I was there. But the are poor corrspondences and I have never heard from them. I have talked on the phone to both, but I have gotten no response. I remember that I got to the train station early in the day and was picked up, taken to the site and there I net the site chief. But he left that afternoon for home cause of his fathers death.. As to the site road, I remember the orchard and the road. And I have given Tom a picture I took in 98 of the old road. It has been taken up and wheat and sugar beets are in it's place. The picture is of poor quality but you can make out the path of the road and a farmer's shed at the end. I got to the det. just after the connies had burned a few vichels. The war in asia was in full swing and All you early guys had turned the heads of all the girls. I think this kinda made the men mad and with some of the beheavior of americans turned them against us a little. The Italians wer time: 2000-05-14 05:11:58

I could help get some info up on Det C Pocking. I was in Germany from 7/70 thru 12/71. I also have pictures of FS Bad Aibling, but there seems to be plenty of them already.

Ooops, might have the date wrong in prior comment. Mighta been 64--I was moving around quite a bit after returning to BA from Sinzig in Dec 63 and might have this trip confused with another TDY to Lubeck for a hearability test there. It had to be before Aug 65, as I left BA then for Ft Wolters, TX. Regardless, whenever it was, I did it!!

A comment about the site at San Pancrazio closing and the ops moving to San Vito: In Jan 65, I went TDY from Bad Aibling to San Vito to test the Directional Dynamic Display position of the FLR-9 to determine whether or not we should use that as an outstation in our net versus San Pancrazio. The train trip and my entry into Italy were interesting, as I was carrying a COMUS Pad and had dipolmatic courier orders. I was a Staff Sergeant at the time and worked all shifts to determine hearability of flashed targets and reported results back via teletype. The results were positive and history tells the rest. Oh, yes, I also spent adequate time in the San Vito NCO Club, with some really great Security Service NCOs and managed to get in tourist time in San Vito dei Normanni as well.

We went to Salzburg with some BA guys (one of them had some teeth that he would let drop in his beer or he would stick them out of his mouth to shock the bar maids).

Tuttle was originally from the south (Carolinas?)- was stationed at Herzo, Pocking, Sinzig and Gieblestadt. C'mon guys - a little help here would really be appreciated.

thanks

I was stationed in Frankfurt from 1951 to 1954 with the ASA. I was housed at the Gutleut Kaserne on the first floor of the building in the back of the kaserne. The 709th MP Bn was billeted in the front building and guarded the front gate. The company commander at the kaserne was Captain Dugan (great guy). We worked on the 5th, 6th and 7th floors of the I.G. Farben Building. The 109th MP BN (I believe) guarded the entrance and checked passes while I was there. A British Intelligence unit was in the basement of the I.G. Farben building. The "Casino" or "Annex" in the back of the building housed a cafeteria where we ate lunches. The Reflecting Pool between the Annex and the main building was a nice relaxing place to rest. The Frankfurt American High School was housed in the buildings about a block and a half behind the Annex, and Gruneburgpark was to the left (west) of the complex. If anyone was stationed at Gutleut Kaserne and worked at the I.G. Farben building from 1951 to 1954, post some pictures !!!! Don R.

One of the guys mentioned Frankfurt. I remember staying overnight and taking in a show at the "Rocket Club" Next day moved into a transient barracks and Harry Kendall and myself decided to hit the neighborhood bars. After about a half dozen "Ein Biere", we returned to the barracks and found out that they had gone on "alert" and we had to load up our gear and get on a truck and await orders. We sat in the back of the truck for about an hour and the alert was cancelled and we fell asleep in our uniforms that night. Joe O Det B 63-65

Even more important than not mentioning Niagara Falls to Mr. Mugu: Definitely, under no circumstances, mention Charleston! Unless you want to tell him and his siblings that the reunion is going to be beld on the CANADIAN side of Niagara Falls. We could invite him to Charleston as long as the Mulich/Harris hospitality suite is on the 18th floor of the hotel, like it was last year. Then Mr. Mugu could "accidentally" do a Wiley Coyote onto the beach below.... Hey, we play rough in ASA. Remember the ASA motto: ASA first, then women and children.

I did some extensive research on Mr. Mugu last night and found out quite a bit. I used Google, Encarta, Websters and the Chicago Cubs 1975 yearbook. The correct spelling of his name is Mogu. He has two brothers, Larrygu and Curlygu. They have a cousin, Shempgu. They are incompetent plumbing contractors working out of Trenton NJ. They are known far and wide in the worker's compensation industry for numerous claims for on the job injuries. Among them are corneal abrasions, stretched noses, boxed ears, shin bruises, sore rumps and numerous concussions from being hit in the head with monkey wrenches. They are known to wreak havoc on every worksite they are hired.

One note of extreme caution. If you meet them on the street DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT mention Niagra Falls.

I attest all of these facts are true. They are fresh facts.

I know this because I just made them up.

I just stumbled onto this. it brings back a lot of memories, the burn-bag thing; At whitebirch, there was aguy who used to write some really excellent porno on the bags that were sent out to the furnace. It took a lot longer to burn the stuff when you were trying to get it in sequence, and give everyone else a chance to keep up. The writer is a plumbing contractor in Colorado. What a waste of talent. I'm just now checking out these various ASA sites and they're a blast. Thanks for the effort. I was at Herzo

Base, 318th USASA Hq Hq Company as a company clerk from

3/1963 to 2/1964. Before that I was at Det27 outside of

Anakara (Manzareli Station). Re. Herzo Base, I remember

driving the Company commander's jeep (then Carroll E. Swain)during bivouacs - it had to be jump-started every time after turning off the ignition. During that period, we were on alert quite often because of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Overnight passes were few and far between. Does anyone remember burn-

bag duty when you had to take classified stuff out to the burn barrels and stand around smoking cigarettes while you waited for the day's "paperwork" to burn down completely?

Sgt. Nichols was the lst shirt - hard-nosed vet, but always

treated guys fairly.

Maurice Nice to see u please send me you phone # or something. As to Grunt, In early 1971 there was a german sheppard ( white) that had that name. They closed the site in 1973 and one of the Italian guards took him home was what I as told... I'm going back 07. was ther in 04 and had a great time. I'd like to talk to you. I'm in the newark phone book alexander

Sometime ago someone mentioned they wondered what happened to Grunt the last dog at the site. Willy told me that they brought in another dog and Grunt had pups. One of wich Will's Uncle took and the rest went to the MPs at Vicenza. When they closed the site Grunt went with the MPs.

Per Will Graziani,

I took a few pictures this year of Motel Romea if you would like to see them. Not much has changed since the last time 2004 we were there.

If you go to Google Maps and type in "Via Romea, Ravenna (Emilia Romagna), Italy", you can see a map/satellite view of the Motel Romea and, scrolling down, the DF site, which is now occupied by a radar dome. If you put it on Satellite and zoom in all the way, you can see the dome and its round shadow. The motel "footprint" seems changed, as if they tore down the old part of the hotel. Maurice, have you seen the motel lately?

I just got back from Ravenna and met Willy Graziani. I have not seen him in 36 years. He would like to get in touch with his old friends from Ravenna and he has many pictures taken during the 60's and 70's. Do any of you guys remember him? He was a young Italian teenager whe wanted to be American and he did become one in the end.

Rich, did you hear about the hijacking of a truck leaving the cialis factory? It was done by a bunch of hardened criminals. The judge gave them a stiff sentence...

I looked here the other day and there was an entry about generic cialis. I was in the mood for generic sex so I was checking for that entry and now it is gone. Now that leaves me hanging.

Well,I cancelled my Baltic cruise. I've been having back pains and I can't walk very far. No sense going to Europe if you can't walk. I've had MRIs and xrays and they revealed nothing. I have a friend who's
a doctor and who very diplomatically told me that most pregnant women have back pains like mine. While he was telling me this, he was looking at my ample beer belly, which is about the size of a woman's belly in her eighth month of pregnancy. So, I think that's the problem and now, I am going to work on my abs. Probably a lost cause, but I'll try it. If I took the cruise, with all that they feed you onboard, I'd probably make the situation worse.

Anyhow, hope all is well with y'all.

I was thinking about the great meals we had at the Motel Romea and thought it might be interesting to ask all of you what were some of your favorite meals in Italy -- both at the hotel and elsewhere in Italy? For me, it was the lasagna at the hotel and the veal bolognese. Also, what were the little croissant rolls we ate with our cappuccino at breakfast? Did we call them croissants or did we call them something else? Anyhow, just thought this might be a good topic to generate some responses on the website.
